Prior to this initiative, readers could access two separate digital newspaper experiences within the same mobile and tablet application. While each product offered unique capabilities, maintaining parallel products and content management systems increased operational complexity, duplicated engineering effort, and fragmented the long-term product roadmap.
The strategy focused on consolidating NewsSlide capabilities into the flagship e-Delivery platform, creating one modern reading experience supported by a single product roadmap and technology platform.

The mobile and tablet application offered readers two different newspaper experiences within the same app:
NewsSlide — an immersive, photo-first experience available in the iOS and Android apps
e-Delivery — the flagship digital newspaper replica available across desktop, tablet, and mobile

Supporting both products required maintaining:
Two reader experiences
Two product roadmaps
Two editorial workflows
Two content management platforms
Duplicate engineering and QA effort
Duplicate licensing, hosting, and support costs
The challenge was determining whether NewsSlide's most valuable capabilities could be incorporated into the flagship e-Delivery platform, allowing the organization to simplify its product portfolio, reduce long-term operating costs, and focus future investment on a single strategic platform—without sacrificing the reader experience.
Rather than continuing to invest in two parallel app experiences, I developed a consolidation strategy focused on retiring duplicate products, preserving the most valuable reader capabilities, and concentrating future investment on a single flagship platform. The strategy balanced customer experience, engineering efficiency, operational cost, and long-term product sustainability.
Executing the consolidation required coordinating multiple workstreams across engineering, editorial, infrastructure, QA, and vendor teams. Rather than treating the retirement of NewsSlide as a single project, I managed it as a phased product transformation that minimized reader disruption while ensuring each milestone aligned with the long-term platform strategy.

Consolidating NewsSlide into the flagship e-Delivery platform delivered measurable business value beyond reducing costs. The initiative simplified the digital product portfolio, eliminated redundant technology and workflows, and created a stronger foundation for future innovation. By focusing investment on a single strategic platform, the organization reduced operational complexity while improving long-term scalability and product sustainability.

As Director of Digital Product & Platform Strategy, I owned the product strategy for the NewsSlide retirement initiative. I evaluated the long-term value of maintaining parallel products, built the business case for consolidation, prioritized roadmap investments, aligned cross-functional stakeholders, and guided the organization through the transition to a single strategic platform. My role focused on balancing customer experience, engineering investment, operational efficiency, and long-term product sustainability.
